Position Overview:

The first and only Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) knowledge hub in the Middle East & North Africa, the world-class www.esgmena.com in English and Arabic are seeking an experienced and passionate Lead Journalist – English to join our editorial team. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of ESG, sustainability, and climate change.

As a Lead Journalist at ESG Mena, you will play a key role in shaping our content, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and engagement across multiple platforms.

This role requires a keen eye for detail, strong research skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Content Management: Oversee the production of high-quality ESG, climate, and sustainability stories, including news articles, features, opinion pieces, and multimedia content.
  • Team Management: Lead, mentor, and manage the editorial team, fostering a collaborative and creative environment.
  • Cross-Department Collaboration: Work closely with other departments to ensure content is integrated across all platforms and initiatives.
  • Content Creation: Write daily news, develop features, and interview high-profile individuals across the space.
  • Editing and Proofreading: Ensure all content is well-researched, accurate, and engaging while maintaining journalistic integrity and the publication’s style guidelines.
  • Story Development: Work closely with the editorial team to pitch, assign, and develop story ideas related to ESG, climate change, sustainability, renewable energy, conservation efforts, and related topics.
  • Fact-Checking: Verify the accuracy of facts, statistics, and sources to maintain the credibility of content.
  • Audience Engagement: Collaborate with the digital and social media teams to create compelling headlines, captions, and promotional material to drive audience engagement with stories.
  • Leadership: Proven experience in managing editorial teams and leading content strategy, with the ability to inspire and mentor journalists.
  • Trend Monitoring: Stay up to date with global and local trends, policies, and innovations in the space to identify emerging topics and issues for coverage.
  • Data Visualisation & Multimedia: Collaborate with design and multimedia teams to incorporate visual elements (infographics, videos, photos) that enhance reporting.
  • SEO Optimisation: Use SEO best practices to optimise content for search engines, improving the reach and visibility of articles.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, or a related field from a reputable university. Master’s degree is highly desirable.
  • Experience: At least 6 solid years of editorial experience in an ESG, sustainability, climate journalism or a related field. Knowledge in the Middle Eastern affairs is HIGHLY desirable (a big plus).
  • Strong Writing and Editing Skills: Outstanding ability to write and edit clear, concise, and engaging content on complex issues.
  • Research Skills: Demonstrated experience in fact-checking and conducting in-depth research on environmental topics.
  • Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with environmental science, sustainability practices, climate change policy, and ecological issues.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong ability to catch errors, inconsistencies, and inaccuracies in content.
  • Digital Literacy: Proficiency in CMS platforms, SEO, and familiarity with social media channels.
  • Multimedia Skills: Experience working with visuals, infographics, and video to support environmental content is an asset.
  • Communication Skills: Strong interpersonal skills to work with a variety of teams, freelancers, and contributors.
  • Adaptability: Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Additional Qualifications (Preferred):

  • Multilingual: Proficiency in additional languages (Arabic, French) is a plus.
  • Network in ESG Journalism: Strong network of ESG writers, experts, and organisations.
