In a bid to reduce pollution and promote sustainability, a new ministerial resolution (No. 380 of 2022) has been implemented, regulating single-use products in the country’s markets. Effective from January 1, 2024, this groundbreaking regulation will impact the importation, production, and trade of single-use plastic bags, including biodegradable plastic shopping bags.
This major step is part of the country’s commitment to the #YearofSustainability initiative, which aims to foster environmentally conscious habits among citizens and industries. The new regulation not only seeks to reduce the environmental damage caused by single-use plastic bags but also encourages the adoption of sustainable, multi-use alternatives.
“This is a critical part of our efforts to combat the scourge of plastic pollution and move towards a more sustainable future,” said a spokesperson for the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE). The move is anticipated to significantly decrease the amount of plastic waste generated annually, marking a substantial stride in the country’s journey towards environmental sustainability.
