Driving forward change through innovation at the Taiwan Excellence Pavilion, WETEX

by Madaline Dunn

At this year’s WETEX, the Taiwan Excellence Pavilion was where Taiwan’s best and brightest gathered to showcase the latest offerings in water management, energy efficiency, and air quality control.

ESG Mena visited the Pavilion to learn more about the companies and their cutting-edge sustainability solutions.

Accelerating sustainability through collaboration

This year, WETEX, organised by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), brought 2,575 companies from 62 countries as the region’s largest exhibition for water, energy, sustainability, and innovative technologies.

Twenty-four international pavilions took part, including Taiwan Excellence, which assembled ten of the leading companies from across Taiwan, all recipients of the Taiwan Excellence Award.

On the first day of the event, the Pavilion hosted its product launch under the banner: “Building a Sustainable Future,” aligning with the event theme: ‘At the forefront of sustainability,’ to demonstrate how companies in Taiwan are driving forward change through innovation.

There, the importance of cross-sector and cross-country collaboration in the climate fight was emphasised, and indeed, in his opening remarks at the launch, Fu-Tai Wei, Director, Taiwan Trade Centre, Dubai, highlighted just this.

Meanwhile, Abdulla Al Maeeni, BPoint Consultancy, commented on how the companies are supporting the sustainability agenda and shared words encouraging the commitment to a more sustainable future.

The launch also heard from Sean Morris, CEO, 1.5 Degrees Sport, who underlined the power of sport to tell stories and engage fans, providing the opportunity to disseminate the message of climate action’s importance, adding: “[With] the challenges we face in the climate crisis, we’re all going to have to get onto the pitch and help out. So, it’s incredibly exciting to come to a technology show and see all the amazing new innovations that are taking place, and hopefully, we can [use] our platform of sport to talk about those, and take [them] to a much [wider] consumer audience.”

Presenting their sustainability-driven product ranges, five of Taiwan’s top companies, FENRI, ROCKER, CTCI, ICP DAS, and Sauber, came together at the launch to explain how their products and services contribute solutions to some of the MENA’s most significant challenges today.

Water tech a critical sustainability solution

Showcasing FENRI’s latest water tech solutions, Kelly Chang, Marketing Director, outlined the role of AIoT in transforming water management.

Dubbed a ‘one-stop water tech solution provider,’ FENRI provides AIoT process automation design, water evaluation and prediction and water and energy management plans.

Providing services to both the private and public sectors, from engineering consultancy companies to the food and beverage sector and semiconductor companies, Chang explored how its FCC+, an advanced water management system, and the first modular and patterned cloud system in Taiwan, promotes ecological sustainability.

Later, presenting ROCKER’s SolarVac 601, a vacuum filtration system, Sales and Service Engineer, Samad Gull, Hanna Instruments FZE, outlined that the product is able to:

  • Detect food microorganisms in drinking water and beverages for application in the inspection industry,
  • Detect water quality for effluent wastewater, tap water and groundwater,
  • Be applied in microbiology laboratories.

Further, he explained the product can be used in various industries, including the inspection industry, food factories, colleges and universities and research institutes.

Also at the launch, CTCI, the largest EPC Group in Taiwan, exhibited its water and wastewater treatment solutions, tailored to customers’ requirements.

Alongside this focus, the company offers expertise in wastewater recycling, and promotes the reuse of water resources, essential in a water-scarce region like the Middle East.

Indeed, just last year, Dubai announced the pledge to recycle 100% of its water by 2030.

Speaking about the solutions’ applications, Nora Liao, Sales General Manager, CTCI Corporation, explained that the company offers services to a wide spectrum of industries ranging from refineries, petrochemical plants, and general industrial facilities to high-tech factories and urban wastewater treatment systems, with a regional presence in Abu Dhabi, Qatar and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).

Addressing the indoor pollution issue

Focusing on enhancing air quality with its Air Purification Solution, Sauber’s wall-mounted air purifier, FLAT, exhibited at the event, tackles a key challenge in the UAE and beyond: indoor pollution.

This kind of product is especially applicable in the region, where indoor pollution can be intensified due to its hot climate.

Moreover, while many people are familiar with the impact of outdoor pollution, something which Sauber shared contributes to the premature deaths of seven million people each year, typically, less focus has been given to indoor air pollution. This is despite it being around two to five times worse, contributing to a wide range of diseases, and other health issues.

Speaking to ESG Mena at the launch, Gary Yang, Managing Director, Sauber, said that education on indoor air pollution needs to ramp up and should be driven forward by industry leaders.

Yang also outlined that his product fills a gap in the market: the need for air purifiers that are durable, sleek, stylish and easily incorporated within the home. Yang shared that his 9 cm product offers the world’s thinnest design, and can be customised to match home decor.

Further, the product features an energy-efficient low-power DC motor, and, according to Yang, has a longer filter lifespan than other offerings.

Energy management and efficiency key for reaching a net-zero future

ICP DAS, a company that targets energy management and saving, was also spotlighted at the launch. Of course, energy management is central to realising greater energy efficiency and is an important part of the sustainability puzzle that will assist the world in achieving its decarbonisation goals.

Represented by Ali Yaghoubi, Sales and Marketing Manager, the company presented products focused on assisting customers in monitoring, analysing and controlling power systems, including its Power Monitoring and Management Solution, which he said optimises efficiency, reduces energy costs and lowers carbon emissions.

Yaghoubi shared there are various applications for this technology, including in panel display manufacturing and renewable energy.

Conserving precious resources & adapting to harsh environments

Water and energy are deeply interlinked and two of our most precious resources. Indeed, the conservation of water has never been more important, with the MENA already one of the most water-stressed regions in the world – and conservation and water management will continue to be a key priority as the world heats up and the water crisis intensifies.

In a time when water is at the top of the regional agenda, the water solutions and services launched at the event show the importance of investing in innovation.

Likewise, energy management and efficiency have been highlighted as powerful climate change mitigation tools, and the products exhibited by the likes of ICP DAS will help form the foundations of a more sustainable future.

Of course, adaptation is just as important as mitigation, and products like FLAT empower customers to take action on air pollution in the places where they live and work.
