FAO: Achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG2) without Breaching the 1.5°C Threshold: A global roadmap

by Madaline Dunn

During COP28, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) released its first-ever roadmap for global food systems.

The plan outlines 120 actions across ten priority areas, including clean energy, crops, and healthy diets, and aims to turn agriculture from a net emitter to a carbon sink over the next three decades.

UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed called the Declaration a “powerful statement of political will to drive the transitions we need” with the incoming 2030 Agenda deadline.

“With seven years remaining to achieve our sustainable development and climate goals, we need to urgently strengthen our collective efforts using food systems as a lever to accelerate implementation.”

The report has received criticism from food awareness, plant-based advocacy and environmental groups for its claims that livestock “serves as a crucial source of high-quality protein and essential micronutrients” and that livestock is “vital for normal development and good health.”

Groups, such as ProVeg International, have also highlighted the paper’s “omission of the impacts of industrial animal agriculture and the need to reduce and ultimately phase out our reliance upon industrial animal farming.”
