Dubai Municipality Launches Smart Marine Scraper to Combat Water Pollution

by Madaline Dunn

Dubai Municipality has announced the launch of a smart marine scraper to combat water pollution. The scraper, developed locally in collaboration with Al Khattal Boat Factory, is designed to collect floating waste in creeks and water canals across the Emirate of Dubai.

The scraper is operated remotely and can be controlled over an unlimited range, with real-time monitoring facilitated through satellite technology.

The technology also features a control system that leverages 5G networks to execute precise marine manoeuvres.

Its secondary systems include an intelligent marine survey system that identifies waste sites and starts the removal process, while an interactive external environment system enhances marine safety by automatically preventing collisions.

It was shared that the scraper tackles water pollution by collecting and transferring 1,000 kilograms of floating marine waste.

The Municipality has assigned a dedicated team to oversee the cleanliness of water canals and creeks spanning over 35 kilometres (19 nautical miles).

This team comprises 12 marine captains, 25 workers and sailors, and 12 marine vehicles who conduct daily cleaning tasks according to the work plan and carry out field follow-ups around the clock.
