JinkoSolar, L&T Partner for NEOM Green Hydrogen Project

by Madaline Dunn

JinkoSolar has signed a contract with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) to supply solar PV modules for the NEOM Green Hydrogen Project.

The project aims to be the world’s largest utility-scale, commercially based hydrogen facility powered by renewable energy.

The facility is currently under construction in Oxagon, Saudi Arabia, and is a JV between NEOM, Air Products and ACWA Power.

When commissioned, the Green Hydrogen Project will produce 600 tonnes per day of “clean hydrogen” by electrolysis.

L&T was awarded the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract to construct a 2.2 GWac PV Solar Plant, a 1.65 GW Wind Generation Balance Plant, and a 400 MWh Battery Energy Storage System under the Power Elements package.

It will also construct three 380 kV Switching Stations and 306 KM of 380 kV Overhead lines required for Saudi Arabia’s grid network.

For its part, Jinko Solar will supply 1GWp of its Tiger Neo “N-Type TOPCon modules.

According to a recent report from Rystad Energy, renewables capacity in the Middle East is set to rise in the years ahead, with solar (PV) forecast to become the predominant source.

There is also a regional push towards green hydrogen. While the NEOM project is valued at USD8.4 billion, the likes of the UAE and Oman have also ramped up investment in the hydrogen space, with the former aiming to become one of the largest producers of hydrogen by 2031, under its National Hydrogen Strategy.
