NGHC, EWA Partner to Train Saudi Workforce for Green Hydrogen Plant

by Madaline Dunn

NEOM Green Hydrogen Company (NGHC) has formed a strategic collaboration with the Energy & Water Academy (EWA) to deliver a specialised vocational training programme for Saudi nationals to support the operation, maintenance, and optimisation of its green hydrogen plant.

This is the first programme of its kind in Saudi Arabia.

The training programme, which began in August, is supported by the Saudi Human Resources Development Fund and seeks to provide practical knowledge and hands-on experience on-site in renewable energy technology and green hydrogen production.

“Investing in education and training is crucial for the success of NEOM Green Hydrogen Company as we start preparing to operate the renewable energy facilities and the green hydrogen production plant and supporting the broader clean hydrogen revolution in Saudi Arabia,” Wesam Y. Alghamdi, CEO of NEOM Green Hydrogen Company, said.

According to NGHC, when full operations begin by the end of 2026, it will become the “world’s largest green hydrogen producer.”

NGHC – a joint venture between ACWA Power, Air Products and NEOM – announced that it had achieved financial close on the facility at Oxagon in 2023, with a total investment value of USD 8.4 billion.

It is targeting 600 tonnes of “carbon-free hydrogen” daily by the end of 2026.

Green hydrogen currently makes up around just 1 per cent of current global hydrogen production.

Estimates are that up to $20tn of investment in green hydrogen will be required by 2050 to meet net-zero requirements.
