1,000+ Ghaf Trees Set to be Planted in Abu Dhabi’s Al Wathba

by Madaline Dunn

TAQA Water Solutions and Royal Gardens Agricultural Contracting have signed a contract to create a Ghaf tree grove in Al Wathba, a suburb of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The partnership will facilitate the planting of over 1,000 Ghaf trees around the main pumping station of a strategic tunnel, irrigated with recycled water from TAQA Water Solutions’ wastewater treatment facilities.

“Optimising our reuse of water for irrigation is a challenge that we are successfully turning into an opportunity. The Al Wathba Ghaf Grove is a great example of wastewater supporting greening efforts in urban and rural areas, helping to build a greener, more sustainable future for Abu Dhabi and the UAE,” said Eng. Ahmed Al Shamsi, Managing Director and CEO of TAQA Water Solutions.

The Ghaf tree is the national tree of the UAE, and alongside its cultural significance, it is also a drought-tolerant plant species that can be used as a tool to combat desertification and enhance soil fertility.

According to TAQA, the project is scheduled for completion in December 2024.
