Food company Mondelez Egypt has announced its transition to 100 per cent renewable energy in its chocolate and biscuit factories in Tenth of Ramadan, Sharqia, Egypt, through its cooperation with the New and Renewable Energy Authority.
The company shared that it will cooperate with the Egyptian government to utilise the energy generated from five government-owned power plants, including the Gebel El Zeit wind farms, the Zafarana wind farm, the Zafarana solar plant, the Kom Ombo solar plant, and the Hurghada wind farm.
Mohamed Elmorsi, Chairman and Managing Director of Mondelez Egypt, said that the cooperation’s benefits are twofold: “On one hand, this collaboration is a significant milestone toward our goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions across our full value chain by 2050.
“On the other hand, it aligns with Egypt’s climate change strategy for 2050 and supports Egypt’s 2030 vision. Reducing carbon emissions and using renewable energy will help us reduce environmental impact and help build more resilient economies,” said Elmorsi.
Egypt is targeting 42 per cent of renewable energy in its generation mix by 2030. In 2023, wind and solar comprised 5 per cent of the country’s electricity, up from just 1 per cent in 2015, while hydro was its largest clean electricity source making up 7 per cent of electricity.
Ahead of COP29 in November, a recent International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) report warned that the world is off track from achieving the 2030 tripling target set at COP28.
