At the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) in Abu Dhabi, in a statement to Emirates News Agency (WAM), DEWA outlined it plans to expand its EV charging network in Dubai.

Majid Hilal Al Hazami, Director of Smart Grid Projects Management at Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), told the news agency that the number of charging stations in Dubai of different types, currently stands at 390. However, by the end of 2025, it plans to reach 1,000 stations, with a particular focus on boosting the number of ultra-fast chargers.

On the latter, Al Hazami explained that with ultra-fast chargers it takes between 20 to 40 minutes to reach 80 per cent charge for a vehicle, depending on the battery capacity and vehicle type.

He outlined that while these types of chargers are available at petrol stations and at entrances and exits of the emirate, in shopping malls, parks and office areas are usually equipped with medium-speed chargers.

To get to the same level of charge, these chargers take between two to four hours, depending on the battery capacity and vehicle type.

Green mobility has been a key focus in Dubai and the wider UAE in recent years, with the launch of the Green Charger initiative in Dubai in 2014. Its first phase was completed in 2015 with the installation of 100 stations.

More broadly, the UAE currently leads in EV readiness in the MENA region and ranks within the top ten globally. By 2030, Dubai alone aims to have 42,000 EVs on its roads.
