Masdar City Opens Region’s Largest Pump Track, Featuring “Sustainable” Materials

by Madaline Dunn

Masdar City, an Abu Dhabi-based sustainable urban community, has announced the opening of the region’s largest pump track, designed for bicycles, scooters, skateboards, rollerblades, and wheelchairs.

The pump track, located in Masdar Park, was designed in partnership with Velosolutions and built with construction waste from previous Masdar City projects and liquid natural clay (LNC). LNC is a solution that conserves water when combined with soil.

As part of the project, Masdar City shared that it had commissioned a seven-month study that included live digital monitoring of the soil moisture around the track in areas that included trees, ground covers, and shrubs. The project demonstrated water savings of up to 60 per cent for trees at certain times of the year and an overall average savings of 40 per cent.

The pump track spans more than 7,500 square metres of shaded hills, banked turns, and rest areas supporting three tracks totalling more than 500 metres.
