Middle East Energy: New Features, Product Sectors and Industry Conferences

In a bid to continue collaboration and knowledge-sharing, the 2025 edition of Middle East Energy, the region’s leading energy exhibition bringing together the leading players of the industry, will feature a host of new shows, product sectors and conferences.

It will take place at Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) from the 7th-9th April 2025. The event will spread across 16 DWTC halls, and additional space will host a wide range of new features. New to the event is the sixth product sector – Battery and eMobility – and a dedicated hall for exhibitors within the battery and eMobility space.

The event will be held under the patronage of the UAE Ministry of Energy & Infrastructure, reinforcing it as a cornerstone of innovation and collaboration in the energy industry, and underlining its commitment to fostering collaboration, driving advancements, and supporting the Middle East and Africa’s energy transition.

Battery Show Debuts with Entire Hall Takeover

One of the highlights of the 2025 show is the debut of The Battery Show Middle East, the latest addition to Informa Markets’ portfolio. Spanning an entire hall, this 13-year-old global platform will showcase game-changing battery technology and powerful solutions. Bringing together engineers, business leaders, industry leading companies, and disruptors, more than 8,000 attendees are expected to explore innovative products from 500 leading suppliers and engage in meaningful dialogue during educational sessions and networking events.

The associated Battery Show Conference will dive into crucial topics such as the impact of electrification on the automotive sector, advanced materials for electric vehicle manufacturing, and alternative battery technologies, offering attendees a rare chance to connect with industry thought leaders.

The exhibition’s expansive knowledge programme will host six CPD-accredited, free-to-attend conferences – twice as many as were offered at the previous edition. They are: The Middle East Energy Leadership Summit; the Technical Seminar; Intersolar & ees Middle East Conference; Global Innovation Forum; Africa Business Leaders Forum; and The Battery Show Conference.

German Lithium-Sulfur Battery Company theion Launches in Gulf

German lithium-sulfur battery company theion has launched a representative office in the UAE’s commercial hub of Dubai, as part of its Gulf expansion plan.

theion, which launched back in 2020, utilises sulfur, an industrial waste product and by-product of the region’s oil industry, for its battery technology.

In its announcement, the lithium-sulfur battery tech startup shared that it plans to work in collaboration with universities, contributing to R&D, while working with industry to streamline sourcing, and with corporates to scale cell production.

In an interview with ESG Mena earlier this year, when speaking about theion’s expansion into the Arab region, Dr Ulrich Ehmes, Chief Executive Officer, discussed the company’s plans to establish an R&D centre staffed with material scientists to serve as a “nucleus for further growth.”

“Around this centre, we aim to build an ecosystem conducive to mass-producing batteries locally and for global distribution,” he noted.

This week, commenting on the company’s Gulf launch, Dr Ehmes called the UAE office the “logical next step” in its Gulf expansion.

“Not only is the energy transition a central focus of the Gulf states, but the business environment is excellent; regional economies continue to grow as well as talents and resources are being available,” he said.

Adding: “Here in the Gulf, we see a compelling vision for the future, the drive to make that vision a reality, and sulfur in abundance.”

According to the battery company, with its technology, it also aims to meet the “fast-growing global demand” for electric flying and other emerging use cases.

“By accelerating battery innovation from the Gulf region, theion will also foster talent growth and job creation and help make the energy transition a reality,” the company said in a statement this week.

Gaussion Raises $12m for Fast-Charging Battery Tech

Gaussion, a University College London (UCL) spinoff, has raised $12 million for its fast-charging battery tech.

The company’s solution enhances battery performance using an external magnetic field during charge and discharge cycles to enable “rapid charging” by steering ions within existing battery cells.

The magnetic field also lowers cell degradation, extending battery life, Gaussion said.

The company’s technology has reportedly been demonstrated on commercial Li-ion cells to accelerate charging by up to 67 per cent. .

“In many applications, we are observing that efforts to rapidly electrify are delayed or blocked due to the cost of raising the ceiling of battery performance,” said Tom Heenan, Gaussion CEO and Co-Founder.

Magnetic enhancement, Heenan said, could provide “step-change improvements” across all chemistries, formats and applications, “affordably” unlocking electrification “without compromising on cost or performance.”

The Series A round was led by Autotech Ventures and supported by existing investors BGF and UCL Technology Fund, managed by AlbionVC in collaboration with UCL Business.

Gaussion said the capital would enable its market entry, which includes producing and selling its products and potentially licensing its technology for other applications.

“Gaussion’s approach aims to expand the solution space by introducing a new variable, rather than displacing or replacing existing technologies,” said Alexei Andreev, co-founder and managing director of Autotech Ventures. “They leverage the advancements of current battery cell giants and apply an external magnetic field to enhance the performance of established battery technologies without changing their core components. We see tremendous opportunities in a variety of markets.”

According to Gaussion, which has a global portfolio of patents and patent applications, the tech has a wide range of applications, including transportation electrification, construction equipment, mining operations, residential energy storage, and utility-scale energy storage for load and phase balancing.

David Grimm, Partner UCL Technology Fund, commented: “Slow charging speed and battery degradation are currently limiting the wide-scale adoption of electric vehicles and the broader energy transition.

“Dr. Tom Heenan and Dr. Chun Tan, co-founders of Gaussion, have managed to solve this problem by building an innovative solution from their university labs into a scaling company. Gaussion’s commercial application taps into a huge market need and we look forward to continuing to support them on their journey.”
