Deliveroo UAE Launches Electric Bike Pilot

Deliveroo UAE has announced it is launching an electric bike pilot in collaboration with EEE Moto and EcoWay.

This pilot will run for a month, beginning on June 10 2024, and aims to test electric bike performance and battery-swapping technology solutions in real-world delivery scenarios.

The battery-swapping stations will be strategically placed within Deliveroo HOP sites alongside restaurant partners such as My Govindas and Jeff Darbar.

Raushan Uttamchandani, Founder & CEO at EEE Moto, outlined that its electric motorcycles and battery swapping technology have been “purpose-built” for operations in the UAE.

“We’re proud to be partnering with Deliveroo and are confident that this pilot will demonstrate the benefits of working with our electric mobility solution and its viability for adoption across the last mile delivery sector in the UAE.”

The stations will also be integrated into the network of partner third-party logistics agencies, King Riders, MJQ, and Syed Asmar, as well as being accessible at EEE Moto and EcoWay’s dedicated battery-swapping station facilities.

Yazan Aburaqabeh, Director of Operations at Deliveroo Middle East, commented: “At Deliveroo, we are constantly seeking ways to leverage technology and build strategic partnerships that support our mission to reduce our environmental impact. Collaborating with EEE Moto and EcoWay to launch this EV bike pilot is a significant step towards a greener future for delivery services in Dubai.”

Emirates Uses SAF on Singapore Flights

Emirates has announced that it has begun using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as part of its fuel agreement with Neste on flights departing from Singapore Changi Airport,

The company shared that approximately 3.3 million litres of blended SAF have been integrated into the fuelling system of Changi Airport over the course of the last few weeks.

This marks its inaugural SAF investment in Asia.

Commenting on the move, Adel Al Redha, Deputy President and Chief Operations Officer, Emirates said: “Emirates’ investment into Neste-produced SAF in Singapore marks a first step forward in our SAF adoption in Asia, a region that is primed to become a leading supplier of SAF, which continues to be in short supply.

Al Redha noted that while the agreement marks a milestone in its sustainable aviation fuel journey in a new region, there’s “still a lot of work to do.”

“As we procure SAF for the short term, we’ve got our sights set on longer-term agreements to help scale up a steady supply of SAF for our operations.”

Alexander Kueper, Vice President, Renewable Aviation Business, Neste, commented: “We are excited Emirates has started using our Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel at Changi Airport as the next step in our cooperation. It makes Emirates the first international visiting carrier using SAF at the airport produced at our Singapore refinery and supplied into the airport via our integrated supply chain. We are looking forward to continuing working together on scaling up the supply of SAF for Emirates’ operations.”

The airline is a member of the Solent Cluster in the UK, an initiative focused on low-carbon investments, and a founding participant of the UAE research consortium Air-CRAFT, focused on developing, producing, and scaling SAF technologies for the industry.

Shift EV Partners with Danone Egypt to Convert Fleet to Electro-fitted Trucks

Shift EV has partnered with Danone Egypt to electrify 50 per cent of the company’s distribution fleet. The project, which will utilise Shift’s electro-fitted technology, aims to reduce carbon emissions by over 6,000 metric tons.

Eng. Aly Eltayeb, CEO of Shift EV, explained that the product enables customers to “give their truck fleets a second life” using an electric propulsion system, which reduces fuel and maintenance costs.   

Further, it was shared that electro-fitted vehicles reduce operating costs by 70 per cent while also reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

Hesham Radwan, General Manager at Danone Egypt, commented: “We strive to develop and improve our operations’ carbon footprint in Egypt and this partnership strongly aligns with our dual purpose and commitment towards business success and environmental and social progress.”

Egypt-based electric mobility startup Shift EV was founded back in 2019 and uses specially designed and locally manufactured lithium-ion battery packs to convert vehicles to run on electric drivetrains using an industrial process in a few hours. 

The electric drivetrains are designed to seamlessly integrate with the existing frame of a vehicle and remotely connect vehicles to ShiftWare, the EV fleet operating system, which enables digital visibility and control.

World’s first large green methanol-enabled vessel makes first call at Jebel Ali Port

This week, Ane Maersk, the first large vessel that can run on green methanol, made its first call at Jebel Ali Port, welcomed by DP World.

Serving the AE7 string, which connects Asia and Europe, the vessel arrived in the UAE for the first time on its rotation, beginning in Hamburg, Germany, and covering several ports in Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Gulf countries. 

The vessel will now sail to ports in China after completing cargo operations in Dubai.

The vessel is equipped with a “state-of-the-art dual-fuel engine” capable of running on green methanol, and the first of the 18 large vessels that will be added to Maersk’s fleet during 2024 and 2025, it was shared.

“We are proud to welcome the Ane Maersk to Jebel Ali, whose arrival highlights the green shift underway in our industry. It is a flagship for sustainability that mirrors our own carbon reduction ambitions at DP World,” said Abdulla Bin Damithan, CEO and Managing Director of DP World GCC. 

Adding: “We are committed to decarbonising global trade and are taking action to support the transition, from electrifying our terminals to using smart technology. The journey to net zero requires the involvement of every stakeholder in the supply chain, and we are proud to be working alongside dedicated partners like Maersk.”

 Christopher Cook, Managing Director, Maersk UAE, Oman and Qatar, called the move an “important milestone” for Maersk in its journey to decarbonise ocean transportation.

“Ane Maersk represents our ambitions towards sustainability and innovation. We are also fully aware that we cannot bring about the green transition all by ourselves. It requires collaboration from the entire ecosystem including our customers, our partners, the infrastructure, regulators and other stakeholders,” said Cook.

Honeywell launches latest SAF production technology

Honeywell has launched its new hydrocracking technology to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from biomass, which it claims can produce 3-5 per cent more SAF, with a cost reduction of up to 20 per cent.

According to the company, this technology can also reduce by-product waste streams when compared to other commonly used hydroprocessing technologies.

The Fischer-Tropsch (FT) UnicrackingTM technology takes liquids and waxes from processed biomass – including leftovers from crops, wood waste or food scraps – to produce SAF that’s compliant with aviation industry standards.

“As demand for SAF continues to grow, the aviation industry is challenged by limited supplies of traditional SAF feedstocks such as vegetable oils, animal fats and waste oils,” said Ken West, president and CEO of Honeywell Energy and Sustainability Solutions. 

Adding: “When combined with the existing Fischer-Tropsch process, our new technology will expand the feedstock options available in the industry to sources that are more plentiful, ultimately helping improve our customers’ ability to produce SAF.”

The company shared that DG Fuels recently selected Honeywell’s FT Unicracking technology for its biofuels manufacturing facility in Louisiana. 

The facility is the largest in the world for making SAF from the FT process and will produce 13,000 barrels of SAF each day once operations commence in 2028.

Michael Darcy, CEO of DG Fuels, said that using the Honeywell technology, the company will supply enough fuel for more than 30,000 transatlantic flights every year.

EasyLease acquires 60% stake in United Trans

EasyLease, a provider of integrated mobility solutions and a subsidiary of the International Holding Company (IHC), has announced that it has acquired a 60 per cent stake in United Trans, a rail and transportation technology solutions provider and a subsidiary of Alserkal Group of Companies.

Established in 2008, United Trans provides technology-enabled mobility solutions in transportation, including rail, smart mobility, aviation, and marine, as well as security screening solutions, with a strong presence in the railway and smart mobility sectors.

The company was involved in various railway-related projects in the region, including Etihad RailDubai Metro, Dubai Tram, Dubai Airport People Mover & Doha Metro and supported smart mobility projects such as Dubai Bus on Demand, Ajman Bus on Demand & Abu Dhabi Link.

EasyLease shared that by acquiring a majority stake, it will be able to intensify the comprehensive range of mobility solutions it delivers to businesses across diverse sectors.

“The acquisition will also benefit from synergies with EasyLease’s expertise in integrated mobility solutions combined with United Trans’ extensive experience in the railway and smart mobility sectors creating an unparalleled value proposition for customers,” the company explained.

Dubai International Chamber supports expansion of two Dubai-based companies in global EV market

Dubai International Chamber, one of the three chambers operating under Dubai Chambers, has shared that it supported the international expansion of two Dubai-based businesses to provide electric vehicles (EVs) in new markets.

The Chamber said that its efforts contributed to the completion of a strategic partnership between ONE MOTO and Global Synergy Trading DWC LLC.

“The chamber played a pivotal role in facilitating the partnership between ONE MOTO, a Dubai-based business specialising in the field of EVs, and Global Synergy Trading, a company from the emirate that operates in international trade, warehousing, logistics, and after-sales support,” it said.

The partnership resulted in the launch of ONE-MOTO Technologies Private Limited. This new company will manage joint overseas operations in the two-wheeled EV sector for the Indian market.

DP World teams up with Masdar to drive renewable power for port operations

DP World and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) have joined forces with the signing of a partnership agreement to explore and implement renewable energy systems across DP World’s global port operations in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region.

The three-year partnership seeks to facilitate the widespread adoption of renewable energy and battery energy storage systems (BESS) within the logistics company’s global supply chain, it was shared. 

They aim to accelerate this process by sharing knowledge of the regulatory landscape and other challenges.

The two will work together to identify optimal sites for the potential deployment of solar and energy storage systems, with an initial focus on Saudi Arabia, Senegal, and Egypt.

Speaking about the partnership, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, DP World Chairman and CEO, commented: “Our partnership with Masdar represents a significant step forward in our commitment to sustainable operations at our ports and terminals. By exploring renewable energy solutions, we aim to reduce our carbon footprint and drive positive change in the supply chain industry.”

Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, Masdar’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “Masdar and DP World are leading the way in the decarbonisation of the company’s port operations and supply chain to explore all options to advance the development and deployment of renewable energy power and storage systems in hard-to-abate sectors.”

Einride and Abu Dhabi ITC partner to scale electrification and automation of road freight

Einride has announced a joint cooperation with the Integrated Transport Center (ITC) and the Abu Dhabi Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) to scale the electrification of road freight in the region.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the parties will look to build out the Abu Dhabi portion of the Falcon Rise Grid, equating to half of the total project, by deploying technology and working on regulation to foster an effective regional transition.

The Falcon Rise grid will stretch 550 km across Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah, encompassing 2,000 electric trucks, 200 autonomous trucks and eight charging stations with over 500 charging points.

It will be developed over the course of five years.

Einride’s freight ecosystem is based on a planned, optimised, and monitored grid system using the Einride Saga platform.

The grid simplifies the management of road freight and is aimed at removing industry inefficiencies, providing uninterrupted operations and reducing emissions within the region.

The full Einride freight mobility offering will be deployed across Abu Dhabi and Al Ain with 1,000 electric heavy-duty trucks and 100 autonomous vehicles, with strategically placed charging infrastructure.

This will all be powered and optimised with the AI-powered freight operating system, Einride Saga, it was shared.

His Excellency Abdullah Al Marzouqi, the Director-General of the Integrated Transport Center, served as the signatory of the MoU, which was signed earlier this month.

“With this partnership, we’ll be able to further solidify our plan of electrification across the region as it will support key work such as the shaping of incentives and policy,” said Robert Ziegler, General Manager EMEA at Einride.

Adding: “We look forward to collaborating with the Abu Dhabi government to ensure a more resilient transportation ecosystem is deployed to drive impact and reduce emissions.”
